Been watching some tutorials and one in particular on Sculpting in B&W Tried it out on this sample

"Sculpting" meaning selectively darkening the shadows and selectively brightening the highlights without loosing total detail in either. I think I about achieved it in this photo, certainly not as flat as a lot of BW conversions I have come up with in the past.

Are we home are we Pete, well you will have to call around sometime or vise versa and I can make a copy of some tuts for you if you want. Using layers you adjust the levels for maximum black and then mask out totally and paint back in the areas you want and the same for the highlights on another layer. Great control better than a blanket adjustment to the whole picture.
