As this really isn't a macro it fits better in the Nature section.

Taken Sunday night with the 100-400mm Canon IS lens.

Not too bad for an in flight shot of a pair of dragon flies flies in tandem. The prelude to a hopeful mating if and when she gives in.

Anyone who has ever tried this will know how hard it is and how quick these blighters move.

You must have lightning reflexes to catch that in mid flight Ralph.
Excellent shot I must say. I wish I could be that quick.

Thanks John and Jenni,

I have made a slight edit to my original comments. They are of course not mating yet. Mind you wasn't for the want of trying for this fella. Dragged her around for quite a while but never actually couples up, which is what I was waiting for. Will have a few more tries at getting a coupled shot. I have one of a pair of blue dragons actually in the mating position but not in focus, so won't be posting that one.

Okay then, this is just the foreplay then Ralph. You must have been quick to catch the 15 secs of foreplay.

As many dragons as I've shot, maybe one or two are in flight shots. Good shooting Ralph!! I10

It's really hard to focus on those little guys when the background wants to pick up the auto focus. Beyond my level of expertise, but once in a while luck intervenes for me. Ralph, look for them laying eggs in the water by dipping it's south end in the water and flipping a drop or two of water. I've seen it a couple of times, and got an out of focus shot or two.

G'day Pete,

Thanks for looking and your comments. I have quite a few of them dipping in the water, I will post a few shortly, maybe later today. It helps if the water you are shooting at is small and confined. But I agree, not bad for using a 400 mm lens The more I practice with it the better I get.

Well done Ralph. I agree with Pete regarding focus, when I try this sort of thing with a small subject the auto focus generally locks on anything but the subject.

Thanks John and Pete, I am pretty chuffed with these as well.
These were shot with the 100-400 mm lends on the 50D hand held no monopod.
Except for a crop on some of them they are as the came off the camera. I plan an a little editing in PS
and trying a print or 3. Should go well.

Wow, Ralph. FANTASTIC SHOTS! I10

You sure do have a great "buggy" place to go and shoot dragons. I never seem to find anything but the lonely one or two flitting around. Butterflies are easier found around here, although only at butterfly houses.

Great shots. I am getting the 100-400 lens for my 50D in Sept., for my birthday. Can't wait. Hopefully I'll have the strength to hold it up by then.

WOW!! Look who it is, our beloved Debi. Welcome back Debi how great to see you able to get back on the computer and visit us here at DPD. I hope your visits will become more regular as you regain your strength and health.

Debi you are right in one way our little lake here has produced a lot of opportunities for shooting insects over the last few years. This was a unique time as our lake was close to becoming a car park when we got 6 inches of rain in 2 days and all but filled the lake again. It is great to see it back in it;s glory and the insects had a field day breeding up during Autumn. I am looking forward to the spring this year as the lake wont loose too much water during the winter so should produce a bumper crop of insects. Something to look forward to when we thaw out from the winter.

The 100-400mm is one of the most popular L series lenses Canon make just behind the 70-200 f2.8. Mainly because it is so versatile. The do make better lenses but value for money you can't go past this one. It is a bit on the heavy side so I would suggest you visit a store or borrow a lens and hold it and see how you go. For wild life on a monopod or tripod it is okay to use.

Once again great to see you back I am sure everyone here will be excited to see you active again. Take care
